On Finding Minimum-Diameter Clique Trees
نویسندگان
چکیده
It is well-known that any chordal graph can be represented as a clique tree (acyclic hypergraph, join tree). Since some chordal graphs have many distinct clique tree representations, it is interesting to consider which one is most desirable under various circumstances. A clique tree of minimum diameter (or height) is sometimes a natural candidate when choosing clique trees to be processed in a parallel computing environment. This paper introduces a linear time algorithm for computing a minimumdiameter clique tree. The new algorithm is an analogue of the natiiral greedy algorithm for rooting an ordinary tree in order to minimize its height. It has potential application in the development of parallel algorithms for both knowledge-based systems and the solution of sparse linear systems of equations.

متن کاملBit 34 (1994), 000{000. Finding Minimum Height Elimination Trees for Interval Graphs in Polynomial Time
The elimination tree plays an important role in many aspects of sparse matrix factorization. The height of the elimination tree presents a rough, but usually eeective, measure of the time needed to perform parallel elimination. Finding orderings that produce low elimination trees is therefore important. As the problem of nding minimum height elimination tree orderings is NP-hard, it is interest...
متن کاملDetermining possible sets of leaves for spanning trees of dually chordal graphs
It will be proved that the problem of determining whether a set of vertices of a dually chordal graphs is the set of leaves of a tree compatible with it can be solved in polynomial time by establishing a connection with finding clique trees of chordal graphs with minimum number of leaves.
متن کاملPebbling in Split Graphs
Finding the pebbling number of a graph is harder than NP-complete (Π 2 complete, to be precise). However, for many families of graphs there are formulas or polynomial algorithms for computing pebbling numbers; for example, complete graphs, products of paths (including cubes), trees, cycles, diameter two graphs, and more. Moreover, graphs having minimum pebbling number are called Class 0, and ma...
متن کاملFast Computation of the Tree Edit Distance between Unordered Trees Using IP Solvers
We propose a new method for computing the tree edit distance between two unordered trees by problem encoding. Our method transforms an instance of the computation into an instance of some IP problems and solves it by an efficient IP solver. The tree edit distance is defined as the minimum cost of a sequence of edit operations (either substitution, deletion, or insertion) to transform a tree int...
